Beryl Elaine Carlsen

Beryl Elaine Carlsen passed away February 28, 2018, at the age of 93. She was born January 23, 1925, in Lorain, OH, to Otto and Thelma Carlsen, where she spent her early years. In 1944, she married Ben "Ham" McKlveen, and they settled in Cincinnati, OH, where they raised two children, Kim and David. Beryl worked for Proctor and Gamble as a field supervisor in the product research division, where she developed a love for traveling. After retiring in 1986, she traveled to many foreign countries, always planning her next trip. Because she had a passion for the animals of Africa, it was her favorite country. Beryl had many talents. She was an avid reader and was never seen without a book in her possession, having a library containing over 800 books that encompassed a wide variety of subjects, ranging from art to history to classic literature. She was an incredible seamstress, had a well-developed eye for interior decorating, and held a great appreciation for art and music. Beryl loved her family and remained close to her parents until their deaths. She had one brother, Bill, who preceded her in death. She was a large part of his family's life as "Aunt Beryl" to his four children and a wonderful friend to her sister-in-law, Peggy. In 1999, Beryl moved to Wenatchee, WA, to be near her daughter's family. She and her best friend drove across the country together at the age of 74! Immediately, she made new friends, enjoyed her grandchildren, and became active in the community. Beryl also enjoyed traveling with her son, David, and his wife, Nancy. She spent every Thanksgiving with them, in California, for many years. Beryl had a spunky wit and always let you know what she thought. She made friends wherever she went, including Pat and Larry Davis of Wenatchee, who adopted her as "Mom". They, as well as dear friends, Sue and Norm Carlson of Wenatchee, were instrumental in caring for Beryl when she developed dementia. In 2016, Beryl's granddaughter, Jennifer, relocated to Wenatchee from Texas to help care for her as she became more affected by dementia. Jennifer and Kim shared the blessing found in caring for Beryl, and were able to find the humor in whatever the dementia brought. Beryl also began attending Calvary Bible Church, where she was quickly loved and appreciated by Pastor Steve, his wife, Cindy, and the entire congregation, just the way she was. She is survived by her children: Kim Hinson (Jim), and David McKlveen (Nancy); and her grandchildren: Jennifer Hinson, Emily Robinson (Ben), and Christopher Hinson. Beryl's family would like to express a special thank you to Tuscany Cottage Adult Family Home in Malaga, WA, for their loving care of Beryl during her last days. A Memorial Service will be held at Calvary Bible Church, 605 First St., Wenatchee, WA, on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made to Calvary Bible Church. She will be laid to rest in her hometown, Lorain, OH, and will be dearly missed. Arrangements are assisted by Chapel of the Valley, Wenatchee, WA.
