Helen Edna Jessup

December 4, 1918 - October 18, 2015 ~Helen E. Jessup, died Sunday, October 18, 2015, at the age of 96. She was healthy and active until just prior to her death. Helen passed away Sunday afternoon at Central Washington Hospital, surrounded by many of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be missed by all. Helen was born in Salt Lake City, UT, December 4, 1918. She was the only child of Nellie and Edward Strobel. She was educated and spent most of her childhood in Salt Lake City. At the age of 16, she was the first woman to be accepted into the engineering department at the University of Utah. In the late 30's and early 40's, she drove her own car (a 1937 Hudson) cross country selling magazine subscriptions. She accepted a job with Boeing and moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1942. It was only after reporting for work the first day that she was told: "We accept women into the secretarial pool, not the drafting department." Helen later moved to the Wenatchee area, where she met and married, Glenn A. Jessup. She was a resident of East Wenatchee, WA for more than 68 years. As the mother of seven children, she was active in the PTA during the 50's, 60's and 70's. Helen worked full time for many years, as a bookkeeper for several local businesses. After retiring, she was a very active community volunteer. She cleaned house for seniors and disabled people and delivered meals for Meals on Wheels. She reluctantly gave up driving at age 93. She was also a current, active member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Helen was an avid golfer and also enjoyed traveling. In the last 20 years, she traveled to New York and Washington DC, as well as internationally to Italy, Russia, Mexico, and Costa Rica, just to name a few. She spent her 92nd birthday in The Galapagos Islands. ~She is survived by sons: Ray Jessup (Norma), Phil Jessup (Judy) and Paul Jessup (Julie), all of East Wenatchee, WA, Ed Jessup (Maria) of Salem, OR, and James Jessup of Ecuador; one daughter, Gayle Jessup (Charlie) of Bellevue, WA; grandsons; Alan Jessup (Rochelle), Kevin Jessup and Chris Jessup, all of East Wenatchee, WA; Jady McCarver of Portland, OR; Casey Hamblen of San Diego, CA; Ryan Jessup (Haley) of Redmond, WA; granddaughters: Janie Shrader (Ken) of Cashmere, WA, Shara Holliday (Lucas) of Bellevue, WA, Shawna Renoult (Anthony) of Rancho Mirage, CA, Hilary Jessup of Cashmere, WA, Celine Jessup and Hana Jessup of Salem, OR; and many great-grandchildren. ~A funeral service will be held in East Wenatchee at Holy Apostles Catholic Church on Monday November 2, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. with concluding service and Interment at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. There will be a rosary service held at Telford's Funeral Home in East Wenatchee on Sunday November 1, 2015, at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Feeding America (feedingamerica.org).
