Homer N. "Spike" Mitchell Jr.

Dad was born in Wenatchee, WA on July 19, 1930, to Homer N. Mitchell and Fern Mitchell. He passed away on Dec 28, 2024, at Blossom Creek Memory Care in Wenatchee at 94. Dad was born and raised in Wenatchee and East Wenatchee. In his early years, dad loved to shoot and hunt with his brothers. He got a job delivering newspapers for the Wenatchee World. He saved up and bought a new bicycle to help with his delivery route which he was very proud of. While growing up, he loved to share stories of playing ball and having a good time with friends and his brothers at Mission St. Park. As dad got older his family moved across the river to E. Wenatchee. Since there wasn’t a high school in E. Wenatchee yet Dad became a “bridge walker” back and forth to Wenatchee High School. He loved to tell people about his bridge walker days. He graduated from Wenatchee High School in the class of 1948. For years, he proudly wore his purple and gold WHS “48” hat. On July 21, 1950, he married Mona J. Camfield. They had 6 children; Ed, Terry, Donna, Scott, Kelly, and Helen. During that period, Dad worked for WSDOT in the Engineering Dept. Dad and Mona divorced and he later married Theda W. Crial on Aug 20, 1971, adding a stepdaughter Caroline, and stepson Dan to the family. Dad and Theda loved traveling in and out of the U.S. They also enjoyed entertaining family and friends at home. They were active members of the King’s Orchard Church in Wenatchee for many years. After retiring from WSDOT, where he worked for 25 years, he then worked for Douglas Co. for 7 years. He liked to say that he was retired longer than he worked. As for hobbies Dad liked to put together model airplanes (he loved airplanes!), and found enjoyment in watching his kids and grandkids in their sporting events, taking photos (never saw Dad without his camera), and collecting antiques. Dad was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, involved with the Boy Scouts, did neighborhood security patrol for Douglas Co, and delivered for Meals on Wheels. Spike is survived by his wife Theda, children Ed (Debbie) Mitchell, Terry (Tammy) Mitchell, Donna Mitchell Dawson, Scott (Debbie) Mitchell, Helen (Laura) Mitchell, and step children Caroline Crial (Rick), Dan (Kari) Crial, 16 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Spike was preceded in death by his father Homer and mother Fern, brothers Bob, Marv, and Wilbur, and a daughter Kelly Mitchell Wannschaff. The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Blossom Valley Assisted Living and Blossom Creek Memory Care for taking such good care of Dad. A Funeral Service will be held on January 14, 2025, at 10:00 am at Chapel of the Valley, 378 Eastmont Ave., East Wenatchee.
