Joan Evans

On March 13, 2024, Joan A. Evans “Sapphire” passed away peacefully with family by her side. She was born on August 22, 1931, to Lee and Lillie Thulean. She resided in East Wenatchee her whole life. She was the granddaughter of Steven Hamilton, the first mayor of East Wenatchee. Her parents were one of the founding members of the Trinity Methodist Church of East Wenatchee. Joan was a cheerleader all through high school and graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1949. She attended the University of Washington and pledged Chi Omega. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in home economics. Joan returned to Wenatchee, where she then married the love of her life Leonard in October of 1953. They were blessed with three sons - Garrett, Steve, and Gregory. The family lived in East Wenatchee, but Lake Chelan became their home away from home. In 1955, Leonard and Joan started their family business in a service station/truck stop. Everything grew from there on the same site. She was a member of the Children’s Orthopedic Guild, Wenatchee Golf and Country Club, and Lake Chelan Yacht Club. She was a devoted wife, amazing mom, and loving grandmother. Her activities included bridge club, painting, creating songs and playing the piano. She enjoyed cooking for family and friends at home and Lake Chelan. She was often seen swimming and sunbathing at their cabin on Lake Chelan. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Garrett and Shannon, Steven and Cheryl; ten grandchildren, Kristen, Lacey, Shanayne, Stephanie, Jan, Ryan and Amber, Tyler, Caitlin and Michi; and twelve great-grandchildren, Tait, Karen, Olivia, Mallory, Ali, Sophie, Theodore, Ernest, Alexander, Zackary, Emmitt and Harlow. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Sharon; her husband, Leonard; and her son, Gregory. A Celebration of Life will be a luncheon held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at the Wenatchee Golf and Country Club, 1600 Country Club Drive, East Wenatchee. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted at the Seattle Children’s Orthopedic Guild, the Humane Society, or the charity of your choice.
