John W. Harrington

John W. "Jack" Harrington, 87, of Wenatchee, WA, died Sunday, September 13, 2015. Dad was born September 9, 1928, to John W. and Anne (Fijalka) Harrington in Tacoma, WA. He graduated from Holy Rosary Catholic School and Bellarmine High School in Tacoma. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946 to 1948 at Guam and Okinawa, playing on the USMC baseball team. He graduated from Seattle University in 1951 with a bachelor's degree in international banking. While at Seattle U, he met Patricia Moore of Portland, OR, on her first day of classes there. He called her the girl with the "Pepsodent smile." They were married June 2, 1951, at St. Therese's Catholic Church in Seattle. Dad and Mom lived in Seattle during the first ten years of Dad's career as a Trust Officer with National Bank of Commerce. In 1962, he transferred to the Wenatchee branch of NB of C (later Rainier Bank and Security Pacific Bank; now Key Bank). He graduated from Pacific Coast Banking School and became an instructor for the school. Dad and Mom raised five children, Nancy, Peggy, Fran, John and Joanie, with all of them being born in Seattle except Joanie, who was born at the old St. Anthony's Hospital in Wenatchee. They now have 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Dad loved to golf and fish, but being an active, involved grandpa - and great-grandpa - was his favorite "hobby" of all. Dad was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and Rotary International. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Pat Harrington of Wenatchee; his daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Tim McMinn of Wenatchee, Fran and Wade Leitch of Redmond, WA and Joanie and Marcus Smith of Mill Creek, WA; his son, John W. Jr. and Kerry Harrington of Lakewood, WA; his sister, Cathy Zderic of Fircrest, WA; his brother, Patrick Harrington of Kennewick, WA; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Peggy Mooney; and his sister, Mary Sullivan. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 25, 2015, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wenatchee. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 24, 2015, in the chapel at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph's Catholic School in Wenatchee or the charity of your choice, in memory of Jack Harrington. Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
