Kenneth Robert Mattson

Longtime Quincy resident, Kenneth Robert Mattson, passed away at his home on Saturday, July 6, 2013. He was born on Dec. 13, 1923 in Payette, Idaho to Ernest and Florence Mattson. After high school, he moved to Oregon, where he worked for Ed and Wayne Kerr's father. Kenneth first came to the Quincy Valley in 1945, and moved permanently in 1949. He raised dryland wheat using a 52-inch combine until he received irrigation water in '52 and '53. His brother, Charles, joined him in Quincy in 1954. He married his wife, Pauline, on July, 8, 1959. They had three sons, LeRoy, Robert and Eddy. Kenneth had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and encouraged his family to do the same. Families from church were regular dinner guests. In the late 1960s, Kenneth took a trip to Israel, which was the highlight of his life. He read his Bible every evening. Kenneth knew that God had been with him, protecting and providing for him. Kenneth retired from farming in the 1990s. He and Pauline made several trips to Arizona, where they volunteered for mission organizations. He continued to garden and make equipment until the last few weeks of his life. He was always giving fresh produce away to family and friends. He enjoyed making wood toys, animals and pictures, as well as painting. He spent many hours on the harmonica and accordion. A jack of all trades, he was always making something new or novel. If he didn't have it, he would make it. If he didn't know how to do it, he learned.. Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Florence Mattson, and his younger brother, Charles. Kenneth is survived by his wife of 54 years, Pauline Mattson, of Quincy; his three sons, LeRoy Mattson, of Spokane, Robert (Jedonne) Mattson, of Texas, and Eddy (Charlotte) Mattson, of Quincy; grandchildren, Rachal (Jonathan) Pinkerton, of Quincy, Joel Mattson, of Quincy, and Lynae Mattson, of Texas; sister-in-law, Jean Mattson, of Quincy; nephews, Rodney Mattson, of Quincy, and Terry (Colleen) Mattson, of Cashmere; niece, Patty (Lance Mears) Mattson, of Spokane; and great nieces, Kristen (Tony) Paul, of Cashmere, and Tallie (Daniel) Kuraspediani of Ridgefield. The funeral will be held on Friday, July 12, 2013 at 12:30 p.m. at Quincy First Church of the Nazarene. Interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Park, in East Wenatchee.
