Mildred Louise Whitehall

Mildred L. Whitehall passed away at her home on Tuesday afternoon, March 18th, as the song "No Tears in Heaven" played softly. Mid was a joyful Christian who lived a life of love and service, first to her family, and then to church and community. Mid was born to Roy and Effie (Fleming) Wise in Chelan; she was the second of four girls. The family grew up at mill camp in Ardenvoir. Her dad drove heavy equipment building logging roads. Even though it was during the Depression, Mid always said they had a happy childhood-hiking in the hills, raising a big garden, and enjoying family time together. Mid graduated valedictorian in 1941 from Entiat High School. It was during her school years that Mid met the love of her life, Delbert Whitehall. After Kinman Business School, Mid worked for the U.S. Engineers in Ephrata until her marriage to Del when he was home on leave. They were married at her parents home in Leavenworth on January 11, 1944. After that she accompanied Del to his duty stations until his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army Air Corps. Mid and Del settled in the Entiat Valley where Mid was wife, homemaker, mother to five children, and ran the farm when Del was working at the mill. She managed to find time to teach Sunday School at the Ardenvoir Community Church and also served on the Entiat School Board for many years. When the Ardenvoir church closed, mom became a member of the Entiat Federated Church. A joy to her was giving children rides to Sunday School if they needed one. Other joys in her life were talking to sisters and family, gardening, baking-especially lemon meringue pie-reading the Bible and many other activities. Mid and Del lived up the Entiat for 58 years in the home they had built themselves. Their children and grandchildren would gather there for birthdays, anniversaries, and summers to be spoiled by Mid and be put to work by Del, changing sprinklers and hauling hay. From approximately 1990-2000 the couple also managed to travel extensively, visiting Jerusalem in the Holy Lands which was so meaningful to Mid. In 2002, Mid and Del moved to Wenatchee where they were blessedly located right between their two sons. Mid lost the love of her life in 2006 after 62 years of marriage. Mid was able to remain in her home with the love and care of family, especially her two granddaughters, Kelli and Haley, until her passing. Mildred is survived by three sisters: Nioma (Wise) Specker of Stanwood; Lila (Wise) Cammack of Entiat; and Zola (Wise) Rook of Sequim. Her surviving children include Duane (Darlene) Whitehall and Greg (Patti) Whitehall both of Wenatchee; Gail (Harry) Huntley of Quincy, and Sue (Ron) Geurkink of Tomah, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two daughters, Rea Jean Whitehall and Rae Dean Martensen. Grandchildren include Eric (Mayra) Geurkink, Alicia (Vince) Coffeen, Scott Geurkink; Kelli Whitehall, Kevin Whitehall; Haley Whitehall, and Jettrell (Ryan) Stetner and two great-grandchildren: Mac Whitehall (born on mom's birthday in 1999) and Jaira Rae Stetner. A service in celebration of Mildred's life will be held on Friday, March 28, 2014 at the Entiat Federated Church at 2 PM with a light luncheon following the service.
