Richard Duane McKinnon

Richard Duane McKinnon, 83, of Chelan, WA, and former long-time resident of Orange, CA, died on Thursday, November 24, 2016, at his home in Chelan. Richard was born on June 20, 1933, in Wenatchee, WA, to Charles Percy and Helen Rinker McKinnon. His parents came to Chelan in 1926 and over the years, shared in Chelan Apple History. Percy was a teller for Chelan State Bank that was located in present day Kelly Hardware. In 1932, when the Depression closed the bank, he was the teller-manager-bookkeeper at the Van Slyke Warehouse Company at Chelan Station that later became Chelan-Manson Co-Op., and then Blue Chelan. Richard grew up in Chelan, graduating from Chelan High School in 1951. He played tackle on the football team that won the State Championship in their division that year. He had his first year of college at the University of Idaho before going in the Army and on to Korea, a military experience he was proud to serve. Upon his return, he finished his college education at Washington State College, graduating in 1957 in Business Administration. He went to work for the Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. until 1984, and then worked for Myers Industries for nine years. On March 8, 1959, Richard married Susan Kay Lovelace. They had three children, Kristin, Carol, and Douglas, and lived in Orange, CA, for 43 years. Following retirement, they enjoyed several years of travel and part-time living between Orange and Chelan, until 2006, when they moved to Chelan and built a new home on the property where Richard's childhood home was. Richard was active in Lions Club, the Methodist Church, Morning Coffee Group, and Chelan Golf Club. He is survived by Susan, his wife of 57 years; two daughters: Kristin Toth- Gilliland (David) of Anaheim, CA, and Carol Stuffler of Ojai, CA; a son, Douglas (Michelle) of Roosevelt, AZ; four grandchildren: Dana Toth Fisher (Michael) and Kevin Toth, and Julia and Garrett Stuffler; a step-grandson, Dillon Harlicker; brother, Joe McKinnon, his adult children: Jill, Jan, and Steve; and long-time friend since grade school, Jim Talley. He was preceded in death by his parents. The family thanks dear neighbors and friends who have been supportive all along, and especially, Thomas Tucker, MD, and the excellent, caring oncology staff at Confluence Health (WVMC), and the skilled, caring Confluence Hospice people. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be given to Lake Chelan United Methodist Church, Chelan Lions Club for its community service projects, or a group of your choice. A Memorial Service will take place on Friday, December 9, 2016, at 2:00 p.m., at the Lake Chelan United Methodist Church. An earlier, private inurnment will take place at Fraternal Cemetery in Chelan. Arrangements through Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee, WA.
