Thomas John Carey

Tom was born June 3, 1924, in Rochester, NY, to John Francis Carey and Rose Josephine (Cook) Carey. At the age of 85 and after a long hard-fought battle with cancer, Tom passed away Monday, February 8, 2010, at his home, with his family around him. At the age of 16, Tom left home and settled awhile in Fargo, ND, before making his way to Monitor, WA, where he got a job in the warehouse. He met Mr. John Farmer, who took him home for dinner, and Tom ended up staying with the Farmers for sometime. It was then he met the love of his life, LaVerne Josephine Duncan. Tom and LaVerne were married on November 22, 1942, in Tacoma, WA and had been married for 67 years. During the early part of their marriage, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Army. While serving his country, their first son, Ron, was born. After receiving his honorable discharge papers, he joined LaVerne and Ron, and later, had their second son, Thomas "Chipper" and daughter, RoseAnn. During their life together, they lived in New York, Everett, Lake Stevens, Cashmere and retired in East Wenatchee. Tom was a man of many trades; he worked in the shipyards, warehouses and the auto industry for many years. He truly enjoyed buying houses and giving new face lifts to each and every one they lived in. He loved to yard sale and turn junk into unique, useful items. He was a collector of most everything, nothing went to waste. His favorite pastime was playing cribbage with whomever was willing to play. Tom's family and friends meant the world to him. He always loved having them around, no matter how young or old. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. Tom is survived by his wife of 67 years, LaVerne; son, Ron Carey of Orofino, ID; daughter, RoseAnn Thornberry of East Wenatchee; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Tom "Chipper". The family would like to give thanks to all of the Hospice nurses, who took such good care of Tom. Special thanks go to Cindy from Hospice, who started out with Tom and showed such love, compassion and support, not only to him, but to the rest of the family as well. The Hospice group are truly angels in disguise. Thanks also go out to John and Pennie Ross and Jerry Woods and Elaine Files, for all their kindness and lending hands, during our time of need. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 11, 2010, at Telford's Chapel of the Valley, 711 Grant Road, East Wenatchee, WA. Arrangements by Telford's Chapel of the Valley.
