Laurie Lee Hughes

Laurie Lee (Snyder) Hughes went to be with her Lord and Savior Monday morning, November 30, 2015 following an extended illness. She was born to Thomas and Ella Snyder on April 28, 1947 in Bellingham, WA. She is survived by her husband, Robert E. Hughes of East Wenatchee; three sons: Rob A. Hughes of Electric City, WA, Chris L. Hughes of East Wenatchee, WA, and Benjamin J. Hughes of Electric City, WA; two sisters: Marilyn Hagerty of Bellingham, WA and Carolyn O'brine of Yakima, WA. Laurie attended Biola University, CA, where she met and married Bob on June 17, 1967. She graduated with a degree in Home Economics from Fullerton Junior College in 1969. In 1969, she and Bob moved to Wenatchee, WA, where he taught school. Laurie also served as a teacher's aide for the Wenatchee School District in 1978, following the infant death of her only daughter, Kathleen Joy. Laurie enjoyed working as the Wenatchee High School library media specialist until her retirement in 2005. Homemaking, raising her boys, growing dozens of roses were some of Laurie's great delights, but she really excelled in baking and family gathering meals. Laurie was active in children education at the Wenatchee Free Methodist Church, where she regularly attended from 1969. Then the family began attending and serving at the Eastmont Community Free Methodist Church in 1994 until present. Following her retirement in 2005, Laurie joined her husband, Bob, in a teaching mission to Hope Africa University in Burundi, Africa. There, she served as Assistant Librarian and assisted in processing the intake of thousands of books into the library. Her delight of baking continued as she weekly made many dozens of cookies for anyone who might wander over to her house. The students thought her name was 'Cookie.' Laurie and Bob returned to East Wenatchee in 2011 from Africa. In 2011, she was diagnosed with ALS and was faithfully cared for with the assistance of the Wenatchee's Confluence Health staff of several departments. Her family was with her until her home going. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name would be appreciated to the scholarship fund of Hope Africa University. Information may be obtained through Telford's Chapel of the Valley. Memorial Services are planned for Saturday, December, 12, 2015, 1:30 P.M., at Eastmont Community Church, East Wenatchee, WA. Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
