Ruth J. Smart

WENATCHEE WORLD OBITUARY Ruth J. Smart passed away peacefully Sunday, May 23, 2010, with her family at her side. She was born March 10, 1930, in Key West, OK. She was one of nine children born to Sylvia "Ed" and Agnes Edmondson. Her early childhood was spent in Oklahoma and later, the family moved to Ontario, OR. In the late 1940's, Ruth and her eldest son, Dennis, came to the Wenatchee Valley. She met and married James L. Tolliver. Together, they had two children, Cheryl and James Jr. In her younger years, she loved to dance, socialize and entertain. She worked as a waitress at some of the early restaurants in Wenatchee, including, Hayford's Cafe;, Rooney's and McKenzie's. That is where she met Clarence "Bud" L. Smart. They married in 1961, and together had two children, Tracy and Corky. Over the years, Ruth was active in Emblem Club and her children's school activities, including Blue Birds and Cub Scouts. For a brief time, she owned and operated Smart's Treasure Cache, an antique store that grew out of her love of antiques. She was a loving and generous soul and offered help and assistance to a number of people at different times in her life. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and wife. Her greatest joy, in later years, was her grandchildren. Illness kept her from doing all she wished the last few years, but her tremendous faith in the Lord never wavered. We will love and miss this wonderful lady, but we know she is pain free and resting in the Lord. She is survived by her husband, Bud Smart; children, Dennis and Kathie Tolliver of Malaga, Cheryl Tolliver-Jones of Sultan, WA, Jim and Tanya Tolliver of East Wenatchee, Tracy and Robin Kansky of Wenatchee and Corky Smart of Wenatchee; step-son, Dan Smith of East Wenatchee; one brother and his wife, Jack and Maxine Edmondson of Moses Lake; 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and lifelong friend, Lucy Berglund. She was preceded in death by her parents; and seven siblings. The family extends a special thank you to her caregiver, Monica, Colonial Vista and Hospice.
