Our mom, Teresa Aguirre Garcia, "La Guerrera" was Born in Tala, Jalisco, Mexico on October 15, 1962, to her father, Maximilliano Aguirre, and mother Tomasa Garcia. She had two daughters from her first marriage. Lucia Gonzalez was born in 1978 when our mom was 16 years old and Rocio Gonzalez was born in 1979 when our mom was 17. Due to marital abuse, our mom separated and was left a single mom with two daughters by the age of 17. Mexico being a third-world country, made it difficult for our mom to know how she would feed her girls on a day-to-day basis. She made the most difficult decision of her life and migrated to the United States. She always had a goal to raise those girls with a better opportunity than she could give them living in Mexico. She met the love of her life, Jesus Hernandez in California while working the grape vineyards. They would migrate from California to Oregon, and the state of Washington, following whatever agricultural crop was ready to pick. Jesus Hernandez Jr. was born in Oregon in 1982. Marisol Hernandez was born in 1984. At that time my parents decided that migrating wasn't easy to do while trying to raise children. Alma Patricia Hernandez was born in 1985. My parents decided to stay put year-round in Washington state. Oroville, WA is as far as possible from Mexico and a small town near the Canadian border that we all know as "home". My youngest brother, Luis Hernandez was born in 1991 and that is where my mom's first medical battle started. She became a type 2 diabetic keeping gestational diabetes. Another battle my mom fought courageously was being left alone while pregnant due to how harsh deportation laws were in the 70's and 80's. Another was being able to apply for legal resident status when Regan was in office, the hope that she looked for in order to bring her girls from Mexico! She learned that children were granted free education in the US and enrolled us in school. She learned English through her kids and the famous show "Days of Our Lives" She learned how to drive a car and got her license. She worked at a preschool in Oroville for a little while. She stopped working in the fields and started working in the fruit packing sheds while juggling four kids. She made a few attempts to bring her girls from Mexico and then became a US citizen in 1995. She finally brought them close to her! She had 6 children. We grew up in a full house and my mom never stopped working hard! She watched her kids grow up, and graduate; then another battle came...end-stage kidney failure. My mom was on dialysis for 4 years. She then received a kidney transplant in April of 2009. My mom still didn't let the fact that she could barely move from how hard dialysis was on her from working. Her kidney was from a live donor that happened to be a perfect match! As the years went on her kids had kids of their own and she became a grandmother in the year 2000. In 2015 she had her first sign of clots and ended up with stents in her heart. This was a quick procedure and she was back on her feet. In 2017 she went through recurrent sepsis, her next battle, from bladder infections landing her in the hospital for at least a week at a time year after year. In 2018 her 12th grandchild was born. Her grandchildren are as follows: Angel Cortez, Jose Cortez, Edgar Cortez, Angela Cortez, Maximillano Gonzalez, and Alejandra Gonzalez (the twins), Jocelyn Gonzalez, Roman Hernandez, Sophia Hernandez, Robert Mikel Bray, Mason Bray and Cora Harris-Hernandez. In 2020 She needed more stents due to shortness of breath. We knew her heart was having issues at that point in her life. In 2020, she also became a great-grandmother to her little bundle of joy Darian Cortez. In 2021, her foot went through a loose step on her porch and that fracture didn't heal in normal time. She could not stand on her feet due to pain ran out of light-duty options and was forced to go on disability. This was the start of her final battle. With how hard the economy has been, she felt anxious about how she was going to do financially not being able to work and waiting a year for approval of disability payments. I know in my heart that my mom is a warrior. She tried getting better and despite wanting to do more, she was confronted with more walls. In January of 2024, she suffered a heart attack. She needed more stents as she was having clots in her heart. At this point, she was told she had heart failure and was not a good candidate for open-heart surgery. She suffered at least another 4 or 5 heart attacks this last year. How strong can a human's will to get up and keep trying? My mom made it on earth almost an entire year before her last heart attack took her on December 10th, 2024. My mom, the greatest woman I've ever known, gave us all she could for almost an entire year. She made many friends, some like family, and relationships through work, she became friends with people of all ages. She was funny, friendly, honest, and beautiful. She was born the poorest of poor with stories that are unimaginable for a child to endure and yet with struggle, courage, and hard work, she accomplished so much. She accomplished exactly what she wanted in this short time on earth. My mom, at 63 years old, owned her own home and left her kids with hard proof that whatever you work hard for, you can have. Thank you Mom, for everything you showed us. You are loved and missed so much. Please know that you are the pride and center of our family and you are "La Guerrera" The female warrior of our family. Nuestra mamá, Teresa Aguirre García, "La Guerrera" Nació en Tala, Jalisco, México el 15 de octubre de 1962, de su padre, Maximilliano Aguirre y su madre Tomasa García. Tuvo dos hijas de su primer matrimonio. Lucía González nació en 1978 cuando nuestra mamá tenía 16 años y Rocío González nació en 1979 cuando nuestra mamá tenía 17. Debido al abuso marital, nuestra mamá se separó y quedó como madre soltera con dos hijas a la edad de 17 años. Como México es un país del tercer mundo, a nuestra mamá le resultó difícil saber cómo iba a alimentar a sus niñas día a día. Tomó la decisión más difícil de su vida y emigró a los Estados Unidos. Siempre tuvo el objetivo de criar a esas niñas con una mejor oportunidad de la que podía darles viviendo en México. Conoció al amor de su vida, Jesús Hernández, en California mientras trabajaba en los campos de uva. Ellos migraron de California a Oregon y al estado de Washington, siguiendo cualquier trabajo de agricultura que estuviera listo para recoger. Su hijo mayor, Jesús Hernández Jr., nació en Oregon en 1982. Marisol Hernández nació en 1984 y en ese momento mi mamá decidió que migrar no era fácil mientras intentaban criar hijos pequeños. Alma Patricia Hernández nació en 1985 y mamá decidió quedarse todo el año en el estado de Washington. Oroville, WA está lo más lejos posible de México y un pequeño pueblo cerca de la frontera con Canadá que todos conocemos como "hogar". Mi hermano menor, Luis Hernández, nació en 1991 y ahí es donde comenzó la primera batalla médica de mi madre. Se convirtió en diabética tipo 2 manteniendo la diabetes gestacional. Otra batalla que mi madre libró con valentía fue quedarse sola durante el embarazo debido a lo duras que eran las leyes de deportación en los años 70 y 80. Otra fue poder solicitar el estatus de residente legal cuando Regan estaba en presidencia. ¡La esperanza que buscaba para traer a sus niñas de México! Ella aprendió que los niños tenían educación gratis en los Estados Unidos y nos inscribió en la escuela. Aprendió inglés a través de sus hijos y el famoso programa "Days of our lives". Aprendió a conducir un automóvil y obtuvo su licencia. Trabajó en una escuelita preescolar en Oroville por un tiempo. Dejó de trabajar en los campos y comenzó a trabajar en los empaques de fruta mientras trataba de criar a cuatro niños. Hizo algunos intentos de traer a sus niñas de México y luego se convirtió en ciudadana estadounidense en 1995. ¡Finalmente las acercó a ella! Mi madre tuvo 6 hijos. Crecimos en una casa llena y mi madre nunca dejó de trabajar más duro. Vio a sus hijos crecer, graduarse, y luego vino otra batalla... Pérdida de función de riñón. Mi madre estuvo en diálisis durante 4 años. Luego recibió un trasplante de riñón en abril de 2009. Mi madre todavía no dejaba que el hecho de que apenas podía moverse por lo difícil que era la diálisis para ella trabajar. ¡Su riñón era de un donante vivo que resultó ser una compatibilidad perfecta! A medida que pasaron los años, sus hijos tuvieron sus propios hijos y ella se convirtió en abuela en el año 2000. En 2015 tuvo su primer signo de coágulos y terminó con stents en el corazón. Este fue un procedimiento rápido y ella volvió a ponerse de pie. En 2017 sufrió una sepsis recurrente, su siguiente batalla, debido a infecciones de vejiga en donde cayó al hospital por lo menos una semana año tras año. En 2018 nació su nieto, número 12. Sus nietos son los siguientes: Ángel Cortez, José Cortez, Edgar Cortez, Ángela Cortez, Maximillano González y Alejandra González (los gemelos), Jocelyn González, Román Hernández, Sofía Hernández, Robert Mikel Bray, Mason Bray y Cora Harris-Hernández. En 2020, necesitó más stents cardíacos debido a la dificultad para respirar. Sabíamos que su corazón estaba teniendo problemas en ese momento de su vida. En 2020, también se convirtió en bisabuela de su pequeño paquete de alegría Darian Cortez. En el 2021, su pie atravesó un escalón suelto en su porche y esa fractura no sanó en el tiempo normal por el calcio débil que tenía en sus huesos. No podía mantenerse de pie debido al dolor y se quedó sin opciones de trabajo liviano. Fue cuando se vio obligada a empezar un proceso para la discapacidad. Este fue el comienzo de su batalla final. Con lo difícil que ha sido la economía, se sentía ansiosa por cómo le iba a ir económicamente al no poder trabajar y esperar un año para la aprobación de los pagos por discapacidad. Sé en mi corazón que mi madre es una guerrera. Intentó mejorar y, a pesar de querer hacer más, se enfrentó a más muros. En enero de 2024 sufrió un infarto. Necesitaba más stent cardíaco porque tenía coágulos en el corazón. En ese momento le dijeron que tenía insuficiencia cardíaca y que no era una buena candidata para una cirugía a corazón abierto. Sufrió al menos otros 4 o 5 ataques cardíacos el año pasado. ¿Qué tan fuerte puede ser la voluntad de un ser humano para levantarse y seguir intentándolo? Mi madre sobrevivió casi un año entero antes de que su último ataque cardíaco la llevara al cielo el 10 de diciembre de 2024. Mi madre, la mejor mujer que conozco, nos dio todo lo que pudo durante casi un año entero. Hizo muchos amigos. Algunos como familiares. Relaciones a través del trabajo. Se hizo amiga de personas de todas las edades. Era divertida, amigable, honesta y hermosa. Ella nació siendo la más pobre de los pobres con historias que son inimaginables para que un niño las soporte y, sin embargo, con lucha, coraje y trabajo duro, logró mucho. Logró exactamente lo que quería en este corto tiempo en la tierra. Mi madre, a los 63 años, era dueña de su propia casa y dejó a sus hijos una prueba honorable, de que todos los sueños que tienes en la vida se pueden lograr con el trabajo duro. Gracias mamá, por todo lo que nos mostraste. Eres amada y extrañada mucho. Por favor, debes saber que eres el orgullo y el centro de nuestra familia y eres "La Guerrera", la guerrera femenina de nuestra familia.
